The company said the app “helps you access information, both online and in the world around you, even with an unstable connection”, adding that “it does this while using less storage and memory, helping your phone stay fast”.

Google also said that the latest version of the Go app will include its Lens technology. This tech can identify, translate and read out words spotted through a phone’s camera when pointed at a sign or menu.

According to a 2017 report by the Wall Street Journal, many emerging internet users will rely on voice and video to interact with their devices.

Taking this report in account, the Google Go app features an artificial intelligence-powered ‘read out loud’ feature, which gives the user the option for the app to read out the contents of a web page.

The Go app is part of Google’s Next Billion Users scheme, which consists of a range of new products and features designed to help the next billion people to come online, the majority of whom will be on mobile phones, research suggests.

Like many of the ‘lite’ versions of apps built for emerging markets, Google Go takes up less space on phones — now at just over 7MB — and it includes offline features to aid those with slow and intermittent internet connections. Google also claims the app’s search results are optimised to save up to 40 per cent of data.

At the start of August, Google announced plans to add augmented reality (AR) features to its Maps app, allowing people to navigate using virtual arrows superimposed onto their real-world surroundings.

Furthermore, the search engine company also revealed that all shipments to customers will be carbon-neutral from next year and it will include recycled materials in all its products from 2022.
